We monitored the recently concluded political parties primaries preparatory to the forthcoming Anambra State gubernatorial election on November 6,2021.
Field reports and those monitored on the social and conventional media indicate that all was not well and that ordinary Primary elections to select flag bearers for the various political parties have turned a nightmare for some political parties.
Some of the reports were not cheering at all while some were appreciable.
For instance,at All Progressives Congress (APC)camp, reports alleged that no Primaries were held at all, that the entire structure including highly placed officials who came to conduct and monitor the Primaries were hijacked by a notorious politician and senator in the state such that while no Primaries were held, results surfaced in the mass media claiming that APC had conducted “free and fair” Primaries in the state, to the chagrin of everyone.
It was so amazing that the leader of the APC in Anambra state and Nigeria’s Minister of Labour,Dr Chris Ngige cried foul, calling for the cancellation of the charade.
We condemn such acts of brigandage and irresponsibility and join Dr Chris Ngige in insisting that the correct things be done.
We hope that those involved in the APC sham will come back to their senses and tow the part of honour by conducting an open, free and fair Primary election.
Apart from the usual seasonal distractions from a notorious factional group in the People’s Democratic Party(PDP)who always want to reap where they did not sow,the PDP and their aspirants under their state leader,Mr Peter Obi and Chief Nwobu, made an impressive outing.
The emergence of former Transcorp boss,Mr Valentine Ozigbo as PDP flag bearer among other heavy weight contenders like Iyom Uche Ekwunife, Dr Obiora Okonkwo,Engr Azubogu,Professor Maduka and others without fracas is a very reassuring development.
Notably, the conduct of Iyom Senator Uche Ekwunife a front line candidate and dogged fighter who was the first to concede defeat openly by congratulating the winner,Mr Val Ozigbo was exemplary, enobling and commendable. It was a good spirit of sportsmanship. We commend Senator Ekwunife unreservedly and also congratulate Mr Ozigbo for his victory.
The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) conducted a more transparent primaries which streamed live on major television networks. APGA under the leadership of Governor Willie Obiano,Chief Victor Oye,Sir Victor Umeh and other capable hands, eliminated distractions early enough to guarantee peaceful primaries which threw up the former Central Bank Governor, Professor Charles Soludo.
Professor Soludo’s emergence as APGA flag bearer raised the bar of credibility in the entire race. We also congratulate Professor Chukwuma Soludo for his victory.
Generally, the essence of democracy is participation and accountability.
Without the participation of the people both in the primaries and the main election to choose for themselves who will govern them, the wrong people obviously take over and manipulate the process.
It is on this note that we call on all political stakeholders to work harmoniously both at the level of primaries and the election proper to elect credible people that will rule Anambra State come November 6,2021.
By the special grace of God,the dreams of our people for good governance and accountability will continue to manifest.
