Tuesday,December 7,2021 stood out as a special date in the history of Anambra state when the Anambra Airport received its first commercial passengers who landed at exactly 2.45pm with the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev Valerian Okeke being one of the returning passengers.
The 50 passenger capacity light Air Peace commercial aircraft which took off from Lagos was said to have landed in Asaba before flying down to Anambra Airport.
It was hinted that some of the Anambra bound passengers who earlier booked to land at Asaba decided to fly to Anambra at an additional meagre cost in order to avoid the stress of driving through the tortuous Niger bridge route into Anambra.
Receiving the first passengers that landed at the airport, the Anambra state governor,Chief Willie Obiano who was represented by the state deputy governor elect,Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, described the airport as a dream come true for Anambrarians.
Dr Ibezim said that Obiano has written his name in gold and called on ndi Anambra to take the advantage of the opportunities which the airport will bring.
The Archbishop of Onitsha of Onitsha, most Rev Valerian Okeke who was among the first passengers, thanked God for giving Governor Willie Obiano the inspiration to build the airport.
The Archbishop said the airport will further expose Anambra state to the world map and reduce employment.
In his remarks, the state Commissioner for works and the chairman of the airport delivery team,Engr Marcel Ifejiofor, thanked the Governor giving him the opportunity to deliver the airport.
Dr Ifejiofor said that the days of ndi Anambra travelling to either Enugu,Owerri or Asaba to catch their flights were over.
