Anambra state has commenced construction of a ninety two thousand capacity international Drug Market at Oba in Idemili South local government area.Also traders at the River Niger Bridge Head Market are to relocate to the international market in the next twenty four months when the project would be completed.According to Gov Charles Soludo at the ground breaking ceremony of the Coordinated Wholesale Center Oba;After the completion of the project every pharmaceutical market and shops would automatically relocate to Oba and the site for the Niger Bridge Head Market would be bulldozed and be used for other things.When completed will contain over 15,000 business concerns including 12,500 pharmaceutical premises 88 executive offices ,Warehouse space of about 60,000 square meters, banks, event center of over 2,000 capacity cafeteria, a general hospital, a parking space of over 3,000 cars, a standard cold chain facility.It will also contain international standard amenities including dedicated IPP ensuring twenty four hours power supply at affordable rate, centralized waste disposal and sewage management system, uninterrupted water reticulation system.It would also contain regulatory offices for all drug and health agencies including NAFDAC, fire service centralized check point including police station.This is enough to contain all open drug market in Anambra state and will be the biggest drug distribution hub in Africa in a regulated, coordinated and licensed environment.Also speaking the representative of Managing Director of Sterling bank the official commercial bank funding the project Pham Adiwale Adebowale said that the bank chose to fund the project because of the strategic position the Onitsha main market is the area of commerce and industry in Africa adding that as promised the project would be ready in the next twenty four months.He commended the Anambra state government for it’s assistance and promised to continue to partner with government in the area of trade commerce and industry.The Managing Director of Ferovial Designers Construction Company Chief Christopher Okpalaugo noted that the firm had concluded arrangements to mobilize to site adding that they are comfortable with the duration of the project as according to him the company would meet the expected target.Anambra state commissioner for Health Dr Ben Adam Obidike explained that;The importance of the CWC cannot be over emphasized in the light of the magnitude of health challenges presented by the open drug market . Available records have shown that the open drug markets serve as safe heavens for the sale and distribution of fake, counterfeit and adulterated medicines which have largely impacted negativity on some of the states health indices.Registrar Pharmacist Council of Nigeria PCN Pharm Ibrahim Babashehu Ahmed noted that the concept of coordinated wholesale center was approved by the federal government in 2015 with the goal of relocating the stakeholders in drug business that are operating in open markets across the country which are unregulated and characterized with unwholesome activities.The PCN granted the location approval of the site in Oba to Contra Pharmaceutical and Allied Products the Special Purpose Vehicle SPV for the stakeholders in Bridge Head Market Onitsha after the successful location approval and inspection was conducted in October 20th 2016, he noted.
