Flagging- off the exercise at Nteje, Oyi Local Government Headquarters of the State, while observing Covid-19 preventive measures, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Nnamdi Onukwuba, said the exercise was aimed at increasing food production to further cushion effects of Covid-19 pandemic in the State.
The farm input include cassava stem bundles, bags of liquid fertilizer, bags of organic fertilizer, Oba super maize and packets of Okro seeds.
Others were litres of organic liquid, bags of lime, poultry cages for household poultry rearing, as well as honey beehives and kits.
Commissioner Onukwuba, who explained that Governor Willie Obiano is determined to boost agriculture to cushion the post Covid-19 effect, urged farmers to deepen efforts at mechanized farming, adding that arrangements have been made to provide farmers more access to farm machineries.
He noted that plans are being finalized to invest one point five billion naira in land development, agricultural infrastructure and empowerment of two thousand youths, urging Ndi-Anambra to engage in “back yard household farming” to ensure food security in the State
Former Vice-Chairman of All Farmers Association in charge of Anambra North Senatorial Zone, Chief Obiajulu Nwoye, said the distribution of farm input, which is an annual event, has endeared the Obiano administration to farmers, resulting in increased food production for local demands and exports.
Some of the farmers, including Mrs. Bridget Ikemefuna, Deacon Innocent Obigwe, and Mr. Chukwuka Okeke, who commended Governor Obiano for his numerous supports to farmers, promised to put to use, all they were given to ensure surplus harvest.
