The 2021 Anambra gubernatorial race promises to be an interesting contest as gladiators in the race are grandstanding and positioning to impress the electorate with various political gimmickry and display of achievements.
With the number of aspirants to the exalted office growing by the day,one of them,Emeka Etiaba,a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)came out robustly to warn that any aspirant who does not believe or abide by the zoning principle is “swimming against the tide ” and will surely fail.
Etiaba in a statement said,”I do believe in zoning. That is why I ceased contesting after I did in 2009/2010 when the principle of zoning had not been introduced. Once it was introduced sometime in 2013/2014,I had to wait for the South to take its turn.
The Senior Advocate threatened,”I know that these aspirants swimming against the tide claim some stakeholders in the South fully support their aspiration but my answer is:Let anyone of the supporters from South attend a rally in the state and say that”.
One major PDP gubernatorial aspirant from Anambra Central Senatorial Zone Iyom Senator Uche Ekwunife has been consistent and insisting that the PDP has no policy of zoning and would therefore contest and go through the primaries. The same goes for High Chief (Dr)Obiora Okonkwo who among some others are not looking at the zoning principle since it is unconstitutional.
Senator Uche Ekwunife is flying the gender kite with lots of many achievements to flaunt in her Senatorial Zone.Ekwunife has a large followership among women and has grown very popular championing the causes of widows, road construction, empowerment and scholarship and physical engagement with the people. She has the knack to spring surprises any time, anywhere while selling her “ka nwanyi jekene”(let a woman be elected) slogan across the state in her bid to give women a bite in political high offices. She is the only woman in the race for now.
The PDP is heavily star studded with aspirants like Val Chineto Ozigbo, former Transcorp boss in his first outing has been making impressive moves and considerable popularity with the youths and his empowerment programme.
Oil magnate Senator Ifeanyi Uba is running under his YPP and remains unchallenged as in other parties. YPP primary elections is a walkover if there would be anything like that.He has a formidable pool of youths in support of his ambition.
Former Central Bank Governor,His Excellency, Mr Charles Soludo has not formally declared his intention for the race but it is widely believed that he will contest.Rumour is rife that many other qualified APGA candidates are on the line up thus generating intrigues among the various interest groups.Only time will determine the true candidate for APGA.
Another APGA candidate showing his interest vigorously is Sir Damian Okolo, the Metropolitan Grand Knight Emeritus of Knights of St Mulumba. He is a lawyer and Estate Surveyor who had so many links with the present and past governments of the present and former Anambra State Government.
He has been on the Board of many institutions and is a tested administrator. He is also popular with the church where he made numerous contributions towards charity and upliftment of the poor and less privileged. He is a member of the Nnewi traditional ruling Council.
APC chieftain, Engr Johnbosco Onunkwo is pulling enormous weight in the race and is among other APC aspirants like Andy Uba,George Muoghalu,Azuka Okwuosa and Tony Nwoye gunning for the office of Governor. All are big time candidates brandishing what it takes to be there.
Hon Engr Chris Azubogu of the PDP is not a pushover. His massive medical reach out to the less privileged in his constituency are sparkling and end…
