The proposed Shanahan University, Onitsha,Nigeria on Saturday took a big leap into reality as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha Most Rev Valerian Maduka Okeke laid the foundation stone with a strong backing from the government,prominent faithful and institutions of the church.
The event took place at the University Main Campus site,Onitsha last Saturday.
Prior to the foundation stone laying ceremony,the Chairman,Shanahan University Construction Project,Very Rev Fr Basil Ekwunife gave a hint that top businessman and politician,High Chief Dr Obiora Okonkwo will lay foundation stone and sponsor the university chapel while Chief (Sir) Mike Anyakwo an Onitsha indigenous business mogul will sponsor a hostel project.
The Oluchukwu Microfinance Bank,Onitsha according to Fr Ekwunife will take up the University auditorium project while the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO),Archdiocese of Onitsha led by Dame Ngozi Nwanosike will sponsor a hostel project.
Trinitas gathered that the Billion Naira university will run a multi campus system with the main campus in Onitsha and others at Ojoto town and other locations.
The foundation stone laying event goes with the 18th Episcopal anniversary of Archbishop Valerian Okeke.
It would be recalled that Archbishop Valerian Okeke was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Onitsha on November 28,2001 and consecrated Coadjutor Archbishop of Onitsha on February 09,2002.
He became Archbishop and Metropolitan of Onitsha on September 01,2003.
Archbishop Valerian Okeke is a member of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).
The Archbishop has made monumental material and spiritual achievements in the Archdiocese especially in the education sector,youth development and charity.
It would be recalled that on April 27 2019,Archbishop Valerian Okeke blessed and cut the soil for the proposed site for the Shanahan University.
While performing the ceremony,the Archbishop expressed gratitude to God for the grace of building a university in honour of His servant,Bishop Ignatius Joseph Shanahan.
The Archbishop prayed to God to approve and stamp the journey started in His Holy name,a University that will bring light to the people around,to the South East,and the entire nation and beyond;a home of truth,wisdom,faith,integrity and success and a house where goodwill towards all is nurtured in order to bring new hope to families,new developments to communities,the state and country,Nigeria.
