The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria, Awka Diocese (CLCNAD), at the end of its 2021 Annual Seminar, called for value re-orientation.

The seminar was held at the Archbishop A K Obiefuna Retreat, Pastoral and Conference Centre, Okpuno from Sept.17 to Sept.19.

The event has a theme: “The Church and Value Reorientation: An effort toward the Eradication of Corruption’’.

In a homily, the Auxiliary Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Jonas Benson Okoye said that the society needed value re-orientation in all its ramifications.

Bishop Okoye emphasised that a Christian should not live a wasted life but bear fruits that would last; leaving footprints on the sands of time.

“As one configured to Christ at baptism, you have to live a blessed life.’’

The prelate, while urging all to know the reasons for their existence on earth, enjoined the awardees to support the laity secretariat, noting that no positive support made to the church go unrewarded.

Wife of Anambra State Governor, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano thanked the Laity for the topical workshop at this critical period in the state.

Mrs Obiano said that the theme for the workshop was apt, noting that Gov. Willie Obiano at inception showed passion for value re-orientation anchored in social reorientation.

“The 10 shared values, well known by primary, secondary school students and their teachers helped rapid growth of the educational sector.

“Anambra educational sector won so many awards nationally and internationally because of value re-orientation.’’

According to her, we are in the era of Gubernatorial Election; your PVC is your power. If you don’t use it, you are encouraging corruption.

“You don’t have the power when you fail to do what you are supposed to do. It is an aspect of corruption as you are inadvertently contributing to bad governance.’’

Mrs Obiano, then, urged eligible voters to come out en masse on Nov. 6 to vote in a credible person for good governance.

Delivering a lecture on the role of the Church in combating corruption in present day Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Basil Okonkwo said that corruption had assumed a normal pattern in Nigeria.

He called on the Church, government, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), families and individuals to shun corruption and make Nigeria great.

Chaplain CLCNAD Rev. Fr. Jude Ezeanokwasa thanked the Bishop and other dignitaries for gracing the occasion, praying to God to grant them journey mercies back to their destinations.

Earlier in an address, the Awka Diocesan Laity President, Mr Joseph Igwebuike said that the seminar was designed for the laity to partake in evangelisation and eradication of corruption in the Church and society at large.
