Popular Onitsha based NGO known as, Development Centre for Orientation,Discovery and Empowerment (DeCode) has commemorated the annual World Drug Day in Onitsha. The NGO led by the director,Mrs Cynthia Enweonwu Arinze engaged in many activities to raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse. It would be recalled that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the world Heart Foundation discovered that that in Nigeria, 22.1 percent of school youth age between 12 to 17 years use drug. It therefore becomes imperative for DeCODE to join others in commemorating the World Drug Day through school outreach events where students are educated on the dangers of drug abuse, facts on drug abuse, effects of drug abuse and prevention of drug abuse. In commemoration of the 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day), DeCODE in collaboration with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reached out to four schools in Onitsha North LGA namely, Washington Memorial Grammar School, Trinity Secondary School, Onitsha High School and Government Technical College on drug abuse awareness using pictorial/ visual evidence based method. This method, it is hoped, will assist the students to make informed decision on why it is important to say no to drugs and yes to lifeIt is note worthy that President Muhammad Buhari, in the commemoration of the 2021 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking launched a programme called War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) to tackle the effects of drug abuse in Nigeria. Nigeria and the United Nations (UN) is determined to help create an international society free of drug abuse and we are doing all we can to support them in creating the society free of drug abuse.
