It was a successful Chrism Mass at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha,on Holy Thursday.
It was to commemorate Christ’s ordination of his Apostles to the priesthood.
The priests of the Archdiocese renewed their vow of celibate chastity. It is the year Archbishop Valerian Okeke marks his 40th anniversary of priesthood in thanksgiving.
The Archbishop also unveiled his 2021 Pastoral Letter titled, “The Priesthood: Gift and Sacrifice.”
The three oils used in the church’s worship, oil of catechumens, Olive Oil and Oil of the sick were blessed by the Archbishop.
While explaining the true meaning and importance of the Catholic Priesthood, the Archbishop said a priest is not ordained to be a parasite and should not be interested in impoverishing others to amass wealth.
He took a swipe on some priests who stage frequent vigils for their congregation instead of giving them opportunity to go and do other things to work and help themselves and their families.”He who does not work, should not eat”he said.
The Archbishop pointed out that the life of a Catholic priest is erected on obedience which he maintained, is better than sacrifice.
The Archbishop had earlier prayed for peace in the state and also for a stop in violence and blood shed.
He expressed gratitude to God for sustaining the life of the faithful from the start of Covid-19 to this moment.
He prayed for the sick and downtrodden.
