Gory details of how Dr Chike Akunyili was killed have continued to emerge.
Report say,widower of late Director General of the National Agency for food and Drug Administration NAFDAC,Dr. Chike Akunyili,was on Tuesday,29 September killed by gunmen at Nkpor, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Six other persons including a security personnel were reportedly also killed in the incident.
It was gathered that Dr. Akunyili was returning from a trip to Onitsha, where he had gone to obtain a posthumous award of excellence for his late wife, when he ran into the gunmen at Nkpor and was shot and killed.
The hoodlums, it was gathered, were chanting anti Nigeria song.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, could not confirm the report at the time of filing the report saying that he had yet to get details of the incident.
Another report from Agulu community, where the Akunyilis hailed from, said they are mourning; adding, however, that, “Nobody is ready to talk to the Press.”
A former vice-president of Agulu community, who is also a retired Information Officer with the Federal Ministry of Information, confirmed the incident to journalists on the telephone, but asked for publication to be delayed
to obtain clearance to discuss the issue.
Meanwhile the Archdiocese of Onitsha has received news of the murder of Dr Akunyili with shock.Dr Akunyili was a member of the board of key medical institutions in the Archdiocese.
In another development,the Senate of the federal republic of Nigeria reportedly observed a minute silence on hearing the sad news of the death of Dr Akunyili.This was prompted by a motion sponsored by Senator Uche Ekwunife representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone.
As the sad news continues to spread,the IPOB has denied it’s involvement in the killings.

A concerned citizen who claimed he saw Dr Akunyili shortly before he died said…“I was with this man yesterday same yesterday at Sharon Hall, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha. It was an occasion of University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA), Onitsha branch event where they honoured late Dora Akunyili.
“He spoke glowingly about Dora and made a donation of 500k to the association.
He was there with his son,Obum now working with Anambra state government.
“We saw them off to the car and it was emotional when Obum hugged him tight as both of them separated to join their respective vehicles.
“Obum was in a white Hilux while the man was in a big Jeep (i think Prado). God have mercy!”
