Catholic Bishops Declare 40 Days of Fasting And Prayers For Peace And Security In South East.

Worried by the prevailing insecurity,wanton killings and bloodletting,Catholic bishops of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province led by the Archbishop of Onitsha,most Reverend Valerian Okeke have declared a 40 day fasting and prayers for God to take control of the situation in the South East and cause change of heart in perpetrators of the heinous crimes.
In a joint statement signed on behalf of the bishops of the Ecclesiastical Province,the Archbishop of Onitsha,most Rev Valerian Okeke, with a theme title..”Those who put their trust in the Lord are like mount Zion that cannot be shaken but will stand forever”, the bishops deplored in the strongest terms, the incessant killings,violence and general insecurity in the entire South East.
The bishops pointed out that,”the forces of darkness and death seem to have cast it’s shadows over the south-eastern part of the country”.
According to the bishops,the situation has not been part the history of who the Igbos are as a people.
The bishops observed that in the midst of these tragedies,many people are tempted to lose faith in God and hope in man.
“It is against this prevalent despondency,that we,the Archbishop and bishops of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province send you this message of hope and call for prayers especially this holy season of lent”.
The bishops urged and appealed to all christian faithful to be committed to the following prayerful actions with a declaration of 40 days prayer for peace and security in all the diocese of the province which began on Ash Wednesday,2nd March to Palm Sunday,10th April,2022.
The bishops prescribed fasting for everybody on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in the season of Lent and suggested that people should not eat before noon on such days/dates as follows,March 2nd,4th,11th,18th,25th,April 1st and 8th respectively.
