It was an extraordinary and unprecedented demonstration of love for the less privileged ones and the sick when the Knights and ladies of St Mulumba,Basilica Sub Council,Onitsha doled out presents and cash worth several millions of Naira for their welfare and also to set the Christmas mood.
The event which took place at the KSM Lodge,Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity,Onitsha,started with a mass presided over by the Chaplain of the Subcouncil,Rev Fr Francis Ojukwu.
Fr Ojukwu while delivering a homily asked the knights and ladies to be grateful to God for keeping everyone towards the end of the year and the beginning of year 2022.
According to Fr Ojukwu,”we have to thank God for giving us the power to re-enact that God is still with us”.
In his remarks,the Grand Knight of the Subcouncil Sir Jude Mbaegbu (Lachas)reminded the knights and ladies of their duties and responsibilities to their neighbors and the society in general pointing out that Knighthood does not begin and end with wearing beautiful regalia and showing off but by being exemplary with good behaviour and being charitable.
President of the ladies,Lady Maureen Umeh also lent her weight behind the Grand Knight by admonishing the ladies to be exemplary and continue doing those things that would promote peace and love in their various families.
The Christmas mood was ignited by the worthy Grand Knight of the Subcouncil Sir Jude Mbaegbu when he announced that 40 less privileged persons invited to the event would be blessed with gifts ranging from food items,wrapper cloths,food packs and cash gifts of N5000 each.
The height of the event was presentation of a cheque of N500,000 to a critically sick member(name withheld) to assist her continue receiving medical attention in the hospital.
Renowned journalist and author,Sir Chuks Iloegbunam who is also a member of the Subcouncil in his reaction,commended the Grand Knight of the Subcouncil Sir Jude Mbaegbu for his initiative and commitment in steering the ship of the Subcouncil positively.
In his contribution,chairman of the planning committee,Sir Victor Orakwue thanked all members of the Subcouncil for their support towards the success of the Christmas outing.
Special awards were presented to five couples for their exemplary conducts.Also widows among the members were presented with fat purses as a show of love and solidarity.
The Lady President Lady Maureen Umeh displayed laurels won by the LSM Basilica Subcouncil as the best and winners of Excellence Award in Onitsha Metropolitan Council.
