The Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria(LECAN)say it would henceforth strike out from its register,names of its members who indulge in illegal practice or misconducts that would tarnish the image of the association.
This warning was handed down by the National President of Licences Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria(LECAN), Chief (Dr) John Ekere Etim at the just concluded National meeting held in Awka,Anambra state.
According to Dr Ekere,many States where the association exist are not following instructions as regards professional registration and membership of the Association and as such attracting quacks and unprofessionals into the system.
“We must return to the basics and hierarchy must be maintained”.
Dr Ekere reminded the LECAN forum that the federal government and other stakeholders in the electricity sector recognize LECAN as a credible association which has assisted in stabilizing the electricity sector and producing the needed manpower and skilled personnel for various jobs across the country.
He commended the Anambra State Government particularly the state Commissioner for Public Utilities for identifying with the Association by sending representatives to the meeting.
In his welcome address,the coordinator of Enugu/Anambra South East Zone,Mr Obi Ogbaji,highlighted the cordial relationship between members of LECAN and members of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
According to him,LECAN members in the zone maintain strict compliance as regards rules and regulations of electrical installations.
LECAN he pointed out,support all efforts against vandalism, meter bypass and other energy relayed offences.
Earlier in his address, the Publicity Secretary of the association,Mr Bolas Enemosah,welcomed the delegates from across the country pointing out that with the encouraging turnout of delegates the meeting would turn out positive and fruitful.
He said LECAN has indomitable and committed professionals who have actually played out the cherished value of the association which says,electricity in safe hands.
The representative of the Anambra State Commissioner for Public Utilities, Engr Victor Meju who is also Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, commended LECAN for organising such meeting in Anambra State.
Engr Meju pointed out that with what he had seen so far,that LECAN has the competence to handle electrical installations adding that it has helped in stabilizing the electricity sector by providing skilled professionals.
He cautioned members of LECAN to always ensure their members adhere to safety measures, undergo regular trainings and protect themselves from dangers of the work.
He also admonished them not to cut corners or use substandard materials in discharge of their duties to avoid consequences of such action.
