Hundreds of market women doing business at the popular Pocket Layout Market,Woliwo area,Onitsha, on Wednesday embarked on a peaceful protest over demolition of their stalls and goods by a family in Onitsha.
The market women weilding placards with various inscriptions marched along the ever busy Port-Harcourt Road,Onitsha alleging that one Ukwa family in Onitsha had during the week, descended on the innocent women with caterpillars, thugs and some uniformed men wearing army, police and civil defence uniforms and demolished their stalls and goods worth several millions of Naira in a desperate bid to eject them.
Some of the women who claimed they were widows, said they lost huge sums of money and sustained varying degrees of injuries while being forced to leave their stalls.
The women alleged that their trouble started last year October 2021 when the Ukwa family of Onitsha presented fake court documents of ownership of the land and used some lawyers to intimidate them to vacate the land.
One of the market leaders,Anthonia Ezeudoye appealed to the state governor,Professor Charles Soludo to wade into the matter.
Also, contacts made to the Anambra Physical Planning Board said the Board was not aware of the demolition excercise.
Trinitas made efforts to reach the Ukwa family for their comments to no avail.
One Ozomma Egbuna said to reside at Wilkinson Street Onitsha was fingered as one of the leaders of Ukwa family.Trinitas invites him(Ozomma Egbuna) to speak on this issue to get his own view.
