Awka, Jan. 24, 2021 (MOI) The tenure of the Executive Committee of Ose Okwodu Market Traders, Onitsha will elapse this January to pave way for a new leadership to emerge as provided for by the market Constitution.
In view of this fact, there has been tension among the traders about the selection/nomination of candidates for election into leadership positions of the market.
However, petitions have been flying in from different directions — from the four zones that make up the market as well as other stakeholders, who have been presenting their preferred candidates.
There have been some requests by some for the state government to install them as caretaker committee members in the absence of election.
Commissioner for Trade and Commerce Mr Charles Uchenna Okafor held a meeting of the leaders and stakeholders at the Ekwueme Square, Awka on Jan. 21 to resolve the issues among them.
Addressing the meeting, Mr Okafor reminded them that Gov. Willie Obiano had cancelled every form of market elections until COVID-19 was over.
He said traders would only be free to appoint a caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the market for the meantime until the ban on election would be lifted.
Okafor, then, pledged that the state government would respect the interest of the traders and install their preferred candidates as caretaker committee members and would also work on their advice to ensure lasting peace and stability in Ose Okwodu Market.
“The names of the caretaker committee will be compiled, endorsed and released to you later in the day,’’ he stressed.
