Anambra State Police Command has said that the land conflict between Umumbo and Omor communities in Ayamelum Council aryea has been brought under control.
The Command also announced that eight suspects have been arrested in connection to the deadly clash between both towns, while one person was confirmed dead and four others, who sustained varying degrees of injuries, are receiving treatment at an unnamed hospital.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relation Officer, Mr. Haruna Mohammed (SP) on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. John Abeng, the Command said that a peace meeting was held at the Ayamelum local Government Secretariat, Anaku which was attended by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Uche Okafor, the Transition Committee Chairman, Ayamelum Council Area, Mr. Benjamin Onyeabo, and the representative of the commissioner of Police, DCP Chris Owolabi.
Others, who attended the meeting were the Chairman, Ayamelum Traditional Rulers Council and traditional ruler of Omasi, Igwe Benjamin Okajie, the traditional ruler of Omor, Igwe Chinedum Okanu, his Umumbo counterpart, Igwe Simeon Chidubem and Igwe Ofuebe of Ifite-Ogwari.
The statement further stated that stakeholders in the peace meeting included Reverend Benjamin Ebo, Chief Paul Odenigbo, who is the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Presidents General of Omor and Umumbo communities, representatives of the Army, Department of State Security, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps and the Divisional Police Officer of the Anaku Division, Mr. Victor Osuasa.
The statement assured that security teams were on ground patrol in the affected communities in order to ensure no further breakdown of law and order, while investigation was ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident with a view to finding lasting solution to the dispute.
