Our correspondent who monitored the event gathered that the Catholic Community led the parish priest by Rev. Fr. David Ozoemenam converged en Mass in their parish premises where they celebrated the feast as instructed by the Chief Shepherd of Onitsha Archdiocese, His Grace, Most Rev. Dr Valerian Maduka Okeke.
The parishioners actually through the event expressed unity and oneness of the parish as they joyfully gathered and professed their faith once more through the famous solemnity of Christ the King.
Delivering his sermon which he titled “Celebrating Christ Our Shepherd, Our King.” the parish priest Rev. Fr. David Ozoemenam explained that Christ the King solemnity is a day which the Church’s liturgical closes for the year, revealing that the celebration began in the year 1925 when Pope Pius xi instituted it while in the year 1970, the celebration was moved to the last Sunday in ordinary time for Catholic Church in Nigeria.
According to him, the celebration reminded Christians about the indefatigable place of Christ’s reign over the Earth and the call to live as heirs of the kingdom, just as he told the congregation that Christ is a Good Shepherd who takes charge of his sheep, pointing out that human Shepherds have failed us but God assured us that he would take care of the most vulnerable sheep as well as the fat and healthy ones.
The Aguleri born cleric further hinted that in the gospel of St.Mathew 25:31-46, Jesus Christ unveiled the criteria for accessing the kingdom of God as; feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the strangers, clothing the naked and visiting the sick.
He urged the faithful to live an ideal Christian life, worship Jesus Christ with their minds and let Christ reign in all their bodies. He praised his parishioners who participated in a special way, even as he eulogized parish CMO, Altar servers, Mary league, Sacred Heart of Jesus society, numerous statutory bodies and Pius societies, saying that Jesus Christ would ever reign in their Businesses, lives and continue blessing them.
Speaking shortly after the celebration, Fr. Ozoemenam described Christ the King as a universal feast of Catholic Church, stating that this year’s feast was celebrated in midst of hardship and Coronavirus pandemic, thanking God that in spite of the obstacles it was celebrated with joy.
His words; “Christ the King is a special celebration in the Church because it is the principal feast among the Christians
“Other Church denominations do not observe Christ the King feast because they do not have a tradition of the Church and apostolic practice but Catholic Church has apostolic succession which originated from Christ to St.Peter the Apostles down to the present Pope Francis”
