There was palpable tension in Nnewi and Onitsha as some Anambra State government revenue collectors defied the government directive suspending tax and levies in the State.
As early as 6.00am, the revenue collectors have already manned their duty post carrying on as usual.
But some transporters who are aware of the government directive on the matter refused to cooperate leading to scuffles.
A commercial bus operator, Mr. Okonkwo Monday who was beaten up along with the passengers who identified with him said the revenue collectors are obviously operating with their own independent laws without recourse to the Anambra State government directive.
He said he had to pay up to the revenue collectors to avoid paying the supreme sacrifice or having his bus smashed.
Another victim, Mr. Ifeanyi Ezirim, said he used the whole of the money on him to buy fuel for the day only for him to run into the revenue collectors who insisted that he must pay or take his bus to Government House, Awka to carry passengers.
He pointed out that every efforts to make the rampaging revenue collectors see reasons proved abortive as his bus was badly smashed with planks while trying to escape.
Many other commercial bus operators who will not want their names in print also recounted their ugly experiences.
When the Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Christian Madubuko was contacted by our correspondent over the development, he said it would be cowardice for anyone to continue to pay when the Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has suspended all forms of levies and taxes as a way of providing palliatives for the operators because of the prevailing Convid 19 in the country.
He urged all the commercial bus operators to use every lawful means to resist the revenue collectors who are bent on sabotaging the State government.
