In a day generally known in Christendom as Good Friday, the Knights and Ladies of St Mulumba Basilica Subcouncil Onitsha, led by the Grand Knight,Sir Dr Gabby Nwankwo, paid Charity visit to various homes of the needy and less privileged. They also visited the Onitsha custodial centre as reported by an official of the Subcouncil, Dr Raphael Omaliko.
The Knights and Ladies were divided into various zones to enable them reach out easily to various homes.
One of the zones, the American Quarters Zone led by Bro Sylvanus Oduikolo visited the St Joseph Providential Home For Orphans,Physically and Mentally Challenged Children at No 10 Niger Street,Fegge Onitsha. The Home is run by the Holy Family Sisters of The Needy.
On arrival at the Home, the Knights handed over various food items to officials of the Home for welfare of the children(inmates).
When the Knights went into the building to see the children,it was a pathetic sight which moved almost all of them to tears.
At least,no fewer than a dozen of the children were abnormal and disfigured to state of imbecility. They were only lying in beds and moping at visitors. They were completely helpless and restricted to only their small beds where they do everything and catered for by the dedicated Reverend sisters.
Nobody would wish even his or her enemy such a misfortune of having a mentally and physically challenged child right from birth.
One of the Rev Sisters told us that some parents came their, dumped their kids and disappeared.According to her, they also gave wrong addresses and failed on their promises to send financial assistance to cater for the challenged children.
We also heard that some of the kids were dumped on the way and picked by kind hearted people and brought to the Home.It is a very heart rending story.
Rev Sister Udes Nkwor is the Superior in charge of the Home. She said they had never received help from the government and that the building they were occupying was a donation by a kind hearted individual.
She cried and appealed for help from philanthropists, institutions and church organisations as well as from market groups.
Sr Mary Johnbosco Abora and Sr loui Mariam Agaba held back tears as they narrated difficulties besetting the Home and the distraught little kids.
Leader of the team of Knights Sir Sylvanus Oduikolo thanked all the care givers in the Home for their humility, devotion and diligence in handling the physically and mentally challenged children. The Knights prayed and sang for the children to lift their spirit for the Easter festive period.
Knights on the trip are,Bro Sylvanus Oduikolo,Bro Mike Abuah,Bro Steve Osuala,Bro Chris Okonkwo and Bro Chike Nwanolue.
Others are,Bro Okwudili Nwosu,Bro & Lady Titus Obasi,Bro Gregory Maduakor and Lady Igwealor.
Rev Sister Udes Nkwor gave the following contacts (08106996737, 07067517216) in case kind hearted Nigerians and those in diaspora are touched to assist the Home. May God bless you as you assist.
