Development Centre for Orientation, Discovery and Empowerment (DeCODE), Youth Training Hub- Africa (YTH-Africa) and Whispering Hope Africa Initiative (WHAI) commemorated the International women’s day with the rural women of Umueri community.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
This year, 2021, the theme for International Women’s Day, “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,” celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the gaps that remain.
According to the Programme Director of DeCode,Princess Cynthia Enweonwu-Arinze,”we acknowledged the theme but we always do our best to localize the global context the way it will be beneficial and impactful for the target audience, in this case, rural women.
We facilitated sessions on Entrepreneurship, mentorship and leadership. They were given tips on how to improve on their existing businesses and access more available opportunities that will make them financially independent.”
According to her, the women were encouraged to add value to themselves and their community by discovering the innate skills they possess as that is the main empowerment that will always make them stand out whether for leadership roles or mentoring.
They were exposed on how they will Choose to challenge barriers that affect their progress because a challenged world is an alert world. And from challenge comes change.
She expressed gratitude to Ngozi Izuora,Chinyere Ezinwa,Sir Victor Ononye and Ada Africa for making it a success. She also thanked Barr Nonso Isiugo Arinze, the Umueri community and Mrs. Uju Anyakora for their assistance.
